Pre-Service Extended Practicum Model

When BEAM Pre-service began in October 2004, pre-service teachers (student teachers) had their first school exposure in their Senior Year. They had Observation and Participation in the First Semester (3 credit hours) and Practice Teaching in the Second Semester (12 credit hours).

BEAM's Extended Practicum Model will introduce Pre-service teachers to an early school exposure in their second year beginning with one unit credit (17 hours) and increasing to six units by their fourth year.

The four guiding principles are:

  1. The practicum is the core of teacher preparation. It is in the practicum where theories discussed in the classroom can be actualized. Exposure of pre-service teachers to actual instruction under master teachers is a strong source of modeling good teaching and learning practices.
  2. The Practicum is most effective when it uses an extended developmental approach to begin no later than the second year of the pre-service teacher.
  3. Each Extended Practicum experience should use a graded (gradual) approach with clear links to a professional subject.
  4. An extended practicum requires supportive internal structures (such as practicum office with staff) and effective external partnerships (e.g. MOA with a DepEd school to serve as a natural laboratory).

The Extended Practicum Program

  • The 12 unit practicum program was formulated after considering the Practicum Guiding Principles and the Practicum Concept. The program is composed of:
  • Field Study 1 - School and Classroom Observation (1 unit)
  • Field Study 2 - Classroom Management Skills (1 unit)
  • Field Study 3 - Micro-teaching (2 units)
  • Field Study 4 - Team Teaching (2 units)
  • Practice Teaching A - Practice Teaching (Half-day) (3 units)
  • Practice Teaching B - Practice Teaching (Whole Day) (3 units)
